Live Presentations & Group Activities


Live presentations and group activities will be offered from three tent-covered stages, conveniently located throughout the festival. Check below for details on each stage and presentation (grouped by stage and sorted alphabetically by title). Check signs at the stages and throughout the festival for program additions and updates. 
 

Main Stage

The Main Stage is located in the Dining Café tent, in the Food Service area, south of Third Street. Main Stage presentations will offer the latest information on some of the most relevant and contentious environmental and economic issues of the day. Leading activists and educators, from around country, will offer fast-paced and hard-hitting presentations and allow plenty of time for questions and comments.

Accelerating the Transition to the Green Economy – Saturday, 3:00 PM
The green economy is growing at a rapid rate and will increasingly challenge the existing, unsustainable economy. Evidence of this paradigm shift can be seen in growing consumer demand for nature-friendly products, huge investments in renewable energy and clean-tech sectors, and more corporate leaders acknowledging social/environmental responsibility as a competitive advantage. As Dr. Danaher documents in his new book, Building the Green Economy: Success Stories from the Grass Roots, there is abundant innovation going on at the grassroots level, but we could be doing much more at the national level to accelerate this transition to the green economy. Kevin Danaher is Global Exchange and Green Festivals co-founder. Described by The New York Times as the "Paul Revere of globalization's woes," his analytical expertise, sense of humor and blunt eloquence make him an exceptionally dynamic speaker. Dr. Danaher has appeared on television and radio shows around the country.

Climate Denial Crock of the Week – Saturday, 2:00 PM
The creator of the YouTube Series "Climate Denial Crock of the Week" debunks, destroys and demolishes the "Climate Crocks" - the disinformation that is being used to keep you in the dark about the reality of Climate Change. Peter Sinclair is a long time advocate of environmental awareness. An award winning graphic artist, illustrator, and animator, Mr. Sinclair runs Greenman Studio from his home in Midland, MI.

Community Leader Roundtable – Friday, 6:00 PM
Dr. Danaher will lead an informal and interactive discussion of the ways that local leaders can help their communities move toward sustainability and resiliency. Bring your ideas, questions and concerns and hear from one of the most prolific and significant voices of the emerging green economy.  Kevin Danaher is Global Exchange and Green Festivals co-founder. Described by The New York Times as the "Paul Revere of globalization's woes", his analytical expertise, sense of humor and blunt eloquence make him an exceptionally dynamic speaker.

Globalization and the Downsizing of the American Dream – Saturday, 12:00 Noon
Based on Dr. Danaher's book, this talk focuses on the negative effects of globalization in the US, explaining how corporate globalization is exporting US jobs, bankrupting our government, undermining democratic principles, and destroying our environment. In response, grassroots organizations are fighting all of these effects but they need to come together in a unified movement. In his presentations, he not only provides a detailed analysis of what is wrong, but he also gives inspiring examples of what we can do to make things right. Kevin Danaher is Global Exchange and Green Festivals co-founder. As part of Global Exchange's continuing efforts to plug people into ongoing activist work, Dr. Danaher will bring books and literature related to the talks.

Michigan Needs a State Bank – Saturday, 4:00 PM
This presentation will show why Michigan needs its own state bank to restart its economy. Charles Fleetham is founder and president of Project Innovations, Inc., a Farmington Hills consulting firm serving Michigan communities and businesses with leadership development, strategic planning, and conflict management expertise.

Natural Lawn & Garden Care – Sunday, 12:00 Noon
How to care for your landscape with respect for the environment. Jeff Copeland of A-1 Organic Lawns LLC is passionate about environmental education.

New Low Cost Technologies for Renewable Energy – Friday, 5:00 PM
An overview of new innovative designs that improve the environment and the livelihood of low income people. We cover energy, renewable energy and sustainable economic development with an emphasis on our work in Guatemala and Nicaragua. John Barrie is Executive Director of the Appropriate Technology Collaborative, whose purpose is “To design, develop, demonstrate and distribute appropriate technological solutions for meeting the basic human needs of low income people in the developing world”.  John is an adjunct Professor of Architecture at U of M.

Saving Energy While Creating Healthy Environments – Saturday, 5:00 PM
This presentation covers building performance improvements that save energy while creating healthy & comfortable living environments using eco friendly products & practice evaluation, strategy planning, and energy tax credits. Ken Byczynski is the owner of Kenco Energy Services. He is an educational/motivational speaker, and a consultant.

Solar - High Output & Fast Payback - At Last! – Saturday 6:00, PM
Learn how solar now puts out more power with a faster payback than ever before! Mark Bauer, President and Founder of Bauer Power, has successfully melded his years of home building experience with a unique understanding of the renewable energy market. Mr. Bauer is a premier educator on renewables, teaching classes on solar and wind for the GLREA and Grand Rapids Community College. Mark’s evolving vision for a more sustainable future is the driving force behind Bauer Power.

Solartopia! Winning a Green Powered Earth – Saturday, 1:00 PM
Solartopia is a unique and powerful vision of a world free of fossil/nuclear fuels where all political and industrial power is naturally generated and controlled by the public.  How we get there is the complex and compelling topic of this exciting presentation. Harvey Wasserman is an author, activist, and senior advisor to Greenpeace USA.

Storm Water, the Hidden Thief – Sunday, 3:00 PM
Discussion about the impacts of stormwater and how it quietly but persistently steals your watershed/water quality, water quantity and money through the gradual build up of sediments and other impacts. Tammie Heazlit is a hydrogeologist and environmental writer and planner with 20 yrs experience with large scale risk management and reduction. Past Assistant Storm Water Coordinator for Utah and is active in efforts to improve Michigan’s storm water program, to save millions of dollars, create local jobs, and reward municipalities that practice low impact governance.

Timebanking for Equitable Community-Building – Sunday, 1:00 PM
A Timebank is a new and exciting way for people to come together to help others and help themselves at the same time. Participants 'deposit' their time in the bank by giving practical help and support to others and are able to 'withdraw' their time when they need something done themselves. This presentation will engage the audience in an exploration of the ways Timebanking can serve as a framework and strategy for building stronger and more equitable communities. Dr. Shawn D. Kimmel is currently the Founding Director of the Detroit-based Center for Community-driven Policymaking, and is serving as Chair of the Board of the Michigan Alliance of Timebanks.

Using Transition to Build Sustainable Community – Sunday, 2:00 PM
Transition Towns has been called the most inspiring movement in the world. Pam Bytner, founder of Transition Oakland County, offers an introduction to the Transition movement and opportunities to get involved locally.

Your Family's "Home Energy Plan" – Sunday, 4:00 PM
Enable home owners to make the small adjustments to lifestyle to; develop an awareness of energy usage, reduce the amount of energy used and associated bills, consider options for generating energy from renewable sources, and maintain quality of life while using resources more wisely.  Jane Esper Vogel founded Partners for New Energy following a long and successful management career with Ford Motor Company. Mark Bauer, President and Founder of Bauer Power, has successfully melded his years of home building experience with a unique understanding of the renewable energy market.

 

Kids Stage & Activities 

The Kids Stage is located behind the Kids Corner exhibits on the north side of the festival and grass lot. The Kids Stage and Activity area is a great place for kids, of all ages, to learn about energy, animals, our environment and going green. Community Earth Drum & Dance – Saturday, 5:00 PM
Welcome everyone to share heartfelt appreciation for EARTH with fun, freeform music & movement! Brought to you by Jennifer Kovach and the Oxford Community Drummers. Fun for all ages. Jennifer has been performing environmental dance for four years and she is part of the Green Team of Huron Valley.

Energy Lessons for Youth – Saturday, 4:00 PM
The solar Jeep and energy bike will be showcased as examples of renewable energy and energy efficiency. The program will include easy ways for children to save energy at home and at school! This will be a fun, interactive, hands-on workshop perfect for kids ages 4 and up. Becky Jo Farrington is the Environmental Education Manager for Michigan Energy Options, a statewide non-profit dedicated to energy conservation and sustainability education and programs.

Festival Felt Craft – Sunday, 2:00 PM
Patty Urda from the Oakland Steiner School will lead children in creating a wet-felted carrot and other surprises. Mrs. Urda is a well-known, local artist and Waldorf parent.

Make Your Own Hiking Stick – Saturday, 3:00 PM & Sunday, 12:00 noon
Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve naturalists will lead an activity where kids can make a cool hiking stick.  Each stick can be decorated with beads, feathers, yarn and more, and all will receive a special map of the Dinosaur Hills trails to try it out.

River Critters – Saturday, 11:00 AM (on the west bank of the Paint Creek, just north of 2nd Street)
Join the Clinton River Watershed Council along the bank of Paint Creek to test the waters. Participate in water quality monitoring and see live critters that live along the bottom of the creek. This activity is appropriate for all ages. Michele Arquette-Palermo is the Director of Stewardship and Education and oversees all of the Council's educational programming including student and volunteer stream-monitoring programs. Michele is the President Elect for the Michigan Alliance for Environmental and Outdoor Education.

Taking Care of our Groundwater – Saturday, 1:00 PM
Participants will learn about Michigan's groundwater resources and how to protect them. A groundwater simulator will show the movement of groundwater and how it can be polluted. This family friendly presentation will help you learn how to keep the Great Lakes Great! Lisa Appel is the Watershed Education Coordinator at Cranbrook Institute of Science.

The World's Been Waiting For You! – Sunday, 1:00 PM
Author Bridget Llewellyn will read her book, One Child, One Planet, and lead an age-appropriate discussion about going green at home, school and for life. She will present family-friendly green projects, such as simple directions for composting. Bridget is a mother of four from Lake Orion. Her background is in public relations and community education. This is her first book. She worked with New York Times' best-selling creators of Stranger in the Woods, Carl Sams & Jean Stoick of Milford, MI on this project.

Worm Bins 101! – Saturday, 2:00 PM
This interactive workshop will introduce the basics of vermicomposting - worm bins! Each participant will have the opportunity to build their own working worm bin, and will receive valuable information on how to maintain the bin once they bring it home. Harvesting worm castings and troubleshooting will also be covered. This program is great for "kids" of all ages! Becky Jo Farrington is the Environmental Education Manager for Michigan Energy Options, a statewide non-profit dedicated to energy conservation and sustainability education and programs.


Wellness Stage & Activities

The Wellness Stage and Activities area is located in Wellness Way located south of Third Street and west of Water Street. Enjoy a free wellness activity or informative presentation, and learn how you can improve your health and well-being. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxing free massage at the Massage Tent in Wellness Way.

Earth Box Container Gardening – Saturday, 1:00 PM
Cheyenne Curran will put together an Earth Box container while explaining the benefits of growing your own tomatoes & peppers in this way. She is very excited about the potential for container gardening to supply a bounty of fresh vegetables with minimal maintenance. Cheyenne lives in Milford and grows raspberries, rhubarb, currants and a variety of vegetables and tree fruits primarily for home use, but also for sale at the Milford Farm Market.

Half Hour to Health – Saturday, 4:00 PM
We look at the paradigm of disease and sickness in the current society, and work to shift that to a new paradigm of wellness and health. Healthy truly is simple. Dr. Kathy Whitmore and Dr. Deana Lajiness are both chiropractors in downtown Rochester. Dr. Kathy is a LifeForce doctor who graduated with honors, and loves to serve the community of Rochester by spreading health. Dr. Deana Lajiness is a trained labor doula who hopes to create a ripple effect of health starting in the Rochester area.

Geothermal Dream Home on a Budget – Saturday, 6:00 PM
Discuss the process of designing mainstream green homes for the mid-range housing market. This presentation will include an overview of energy efficient building solutions using the latest affordable products, and explaining and emphasizing the use of cost effective geothermal heating systems with a payback of less than five years. This is a co-presentation with the owner of Lakeside Energy Solutions. Serving the Architecture and Building industry for over ten years, Stephen McKay has played a critical role in leading the green design initiative at Dominick Tringali Architects and throughout the region.

Getting Grounded in Yoga – Sunday, 12:00 Noon
Brian Granader, owner of Rochester Hill's premier yoga studio, will be leading a one hour yoga session for people of all ages and levels of experience.  Get grounded in yoga with Brian as he brings nearly 9 years of teaching experience to you all who participate. Those who are new to Red Lotus Yoga will receive a free one week pass to practice at the studio!

Good Healthy Water – Saturday, 2:00 PM
Linda Harless & Dianne Dougherty of Enagic will do a demonstration and presentation of Kangen Water and Ionized Alkaline Water. Linda is a health & wellness educator, RN and BSN.

Is Your Water Killing You? Finding Healthy Hydration – Sunday, 2:00 PM
Explore the all-important issues that surround the world's water....and YOUR health. Harvey Wasserman is the president of the Wasserman Water Company.

Karma and the Environment – Friday, 6:00 PM
Explores the concept of "Karma" or the simultaneity of Cause and Effect in Environmental issues as practiced by the Soka Gakki International. Learn how to use the philosophy of natural medicine to create sustainable changes in your health NOW! Dr. Matthew Marturano is a naturopathic physician, speaker, and health news writer. Secretary for the Michigan Association of Naturopathic Physicians and has a private practice focused on weight loss, fertility, and digestive disorders.

Raw Food Diet: Best for Us and Our Planet – Sunday, 3:00 PM
Getting people thinking about what is our most natural food, our most whole, and healthy diet for the human species. How do we know, what is the science behind this? Why is it best for the planet, too? Ellen Livingston teaches yoga and gives classes, seminars, retreats, and coaching based on the benefits of a raw vegan diet. Ellen has studied extensively with many of today's top raw food leaders. Her talks are always engaging, informative, and eye-opening.

Tai Chi: Chinese Exercise – Saturday, 3:00 PM
Learn a new exercise to do that harmonizes the Body, Mind and Spirit with nature. Jeffrey T. Remer of the Little Nine Heaven Kung Fu Association has been studying Tai Chi/Kung Fu for 18 years. He is also a local acupuncturist and Chinese medicine practitioner.

This will be a 50 minute basic level yoga class. Pam Goff is a lead yoga teacher at UpDog Center of Rochester and has been teaching yoga for 15 years.
 

Connections Café Roundtables & Internet Station

A wide variety of topics will be discussed at the Connections Café roundtables. Check the signs on tables and jump in the discussion with subject matter experts at any time. A green resources Internet Station will be generously provided Timbuktu Internet Cafe and T-Mobile, and will feature GreeningDetroit.com and Detroit Metro Green Map.
